Insertion modes in PopChar

PopChar gives you several options for how characters are inserted into your documents.
You can find these options in the bottom-right corner of the PopChar window.
Each mode determines how PopChar inserts the selected character into your application.

Plain text mode

The first option represents plain text.
In this mode, PopChar inserts the selected character using the font currently active in your document.

Best for: When the font shown in PopChar matches the font you’re using in your app.

Tip: If the fonts don’t match, the inserted character might look different.
To fix this, simply reformat the character in your document or try the next mode — formatted text.

Formatted text mode

The second option represents formatted text.
PopChar inserts the character along with font and formatting information from the PopChar window.

Since the text format includes font size, you can even adjust it by clicking the formatted text segment again.

Note: Some applications ignore formatting information.
If an app doesn’t support copying or pasting formatted text it won’t display the correct font or size from PopChar.
(These apps typically support only one font per document.)

Code and name insertion

The last option is a pop-up menu that lets you insert characters in different formats:

  • HTML
  • Swift
  • Decimal
  • Hex
  • Name
  • Description

Example:

If you choose HTML and insert:

  • The copyright symbol "©", PopChar inserts ©.
  • The capital Cyrillic letter “Д”, PopChar inserts Д.

This is especially useful when working with web pages in plain HTML, as you can quickly insert the correct entity codes for special symbols.

Tip: There’s a settings option that gives you more control over how HTML symbols are inserted. For example, choosing between named entities (©) and numeric codes (©).

Application-specific insertion modes

PopChar remembers your insertion mode settings for each application individually.
This means you can use one mode in a text editor and another in a design tool and PopChar will remember your choice automatically.

Copying characters via context menu

Instead of inserting a character directly, you can also Control-click or Right-click on it to open a context menu.

From there, you can choose to copy the selected character as:

  • The character itself
  • Its HTML code
  • Its Unicode number
  • Its Unicode name

This makes it easy to use characters in different formats without switching modes.
